Standardized Cosmos Powder with Potent Antidiabetic and Antioxidant Property
Unhealty diet among Malaysian- A lot of Malaysians are practicising unhealty diet. Report from WHO and MANS (Malaysian Adult Nutrition study) stated that around 80% of Malaysians do not consume enough vegetables in their daily diets. This will eventually lead to health issue such as obesity, diabetic, heart problem etc. Hectic lifesytle is the norm excuses given for not taking vegetables in their diet. Cosmos powder is designed to address this problem. The powder is designed in a convenient way so that it can be incoorperated into many foods at any time. >> FULL article https://sciencepark.upm.edu.my/artikel/standardized_cosmos_powder_with_potent_antidiabetic_and_antioxidant_property-55781 Extraction And Enrichment Of Flavonoids From Oil Palm Leaves Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a major commodity in many countries. In Malaysia, 5.8 millions hectares of oil palm plantation which producing 43.4 millinon tonnes palm oil annually. In the wake of large-scale cultivation of the crop, a huge amount of biomass is produced that leads to a great challenge to agricultural waste management. Oil palm leaves (OPL) are produced 19.5 million tonnes annually and are considered as an underutilized oil palm biomass with low value. Interestingly, OPLs contain large amount of flavonoids in particular flavonoid C-glycosides which are known to possess useful biological properties such as wound healing and antioxidative properties. The conventional methods which often starts with solid-liquid extraction, followed by liquid-liquid extraction and eventually column chromatography are not only produced low efficiency, time-consuming and small scale application, the methods also require high consumption of solvent and energy. >> FULL article https://sciencepark.upm.edu.my/artikel/extraction_and_enrichment_of_flavonoids_from_oil_palm_leaves-55779 Agro-waste to Organic Amendments Improve Soil Health, Crop Productivity, And Income Inefficient use of crops’ essential nutrients especially, phosphorus in acid soils of Malaysia and elsewhere is related to high contents of aluminium and iron ions because they are fixed by these ions. The conventional method of managing for example, phosphorus fixation by aluminium and iron ions is through the use of large amounts of lime and phosphate fertilizers to saturate aluminium and iron ions. Because this practice of controlling nutrient fixation entails wastage through excessive use of non-renewable or finite resources such as inorganic limes and chemical fertilizers, the existing practice is neither economically viable nor environmental friendly. Moreover, cultivation of crops such as maize or rice leads to production of significant amount of agro-wastes. These agro-wastes are commonly burned in situ after crop harvest. This practice has been implicated in the environmental pollution. Burning of agro-wastes releases hazardous greenhouse gases and particles into the atmosphere. This causes numerous health and environmental problems. To ensure significant improvement in the well-being of farmers, we were motivated to come out with an intervention to improve soil and crop productivity not only in terms of yield and soil quality but to also reduce cost of production such that the livelihood and economic income of the farmers are significantly improved. Therefore, the transformation of the existing agro-wastes into organic amendments/conditioners. >> FULL article https://sciencepark.upm.edu.my/artikel/agro_wates_to_organic_amendments_improve_soil_health_crop_productivity_and_income-55777
